Informatics Initiatives at the Academy: Electronic Nutrition Care Process Record System (ENCPRS) Functional Profile
The Electronic Nutrition Care Process Record System Functional Profile, or ENCPRS for short, is a Health Level 7 (HL7) standard that describes what functionality should exist in an Electronic Health Record (EHR) related to nutrition. The ENCPRS provides a road map toward a process for nutrition professionals to integrate data collection for patient care and for the purpose of practice-based research. The Academy began work on this functional profile in 2009 with the first release being completed and published in 2013. After updating the first release with feedback from the user community and subject matter experts, the second version of the functional profile was published in December 2018. In order to mature this health IT standard, the functional profile is currently being validated against two EHR implementations to ensure it has the correct functionality to support the nutrition care process in EHRs for dietitians. All dietitians are encouraged to utilize the ENCPRS to incorporate the nutrition care process and ease the collection of data in their EHR, as well as provide feedback on the functionality contained within the ENCPRS. The ENCPRS is free to use and available with a free membership on the HL7 website. For more information on the ENCPRS or other informatics initiatives at the Academy, contact Becky Gradl, Informatics Manager, at [email protected].
