Greetings to all of our Members of MSAND!

I hope everyone has a great summer and that you find some

time to relax in the sun. I wanted to let
everyone know what

an honor it is to be your elected
President. Many thanks to

LaShaundrea Crook for leading us through an
awesome 2016-2017

year as we start to gear up for a fantastic
2017-2018 year.

I am excited to work with all of outstanding Board Members,

regional presidents, and see how we can make
MS-AND better for

everyone in the state. Connie Black and I
are getting ready to

represent MS-AND in Washington DC. We hope to
bring back a lot of

positive feedback from this meeting.

Academy Updates

All Member Call to Action for Future Practice
The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics House of Delegates (HOD) discussed the future of nutrition and dietetics practice during the HOD Spring 2017 virtual meeting on April 22.

Mega Issue Question
How can credentialed nutrition and dietetics practitioners elevate the profession, expand opportunities, and enhance practice for the Second Century?

Delegates used a variety of strategies to prepare for the discussion and glean member input regarding the future of nutrition and dietetic practice. Delegates conducted presentations, webinars, discussions, and surveys among constituents. Based on the dialogue, report outs, and notes captured in the workbooks from each table, essential areas identified to move the profession forward aligned with the change drivers and recommendations of the Council on Future Practice’s Visioning Report 2017 and the Rationale for Future Education Preparation of Nutrition and Dietetics Practitioners from the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND). Access the report and HOD meeting materials.

Academy BOD Highlights: A Year in Review 2016–2017
The Academy Board of Directors’ Year in Review report contains selected highlights from the 2017-2018 fiscal year. This review provides a snapshot for members of events and activities that were accomplished by the Academy leadership team throughout the year. Note, this is not a comprehensive list of everything that took place during the year. The report may be accessed on the Academy website.

Updated June 2017 Definition of Terms List
The Academy’s Definition of Terms list was updated in June 2017. The Academy definitions serve as standardized language for RDNs and NDTRs to guide individual scope of practice and to apply standards in various practice settings. The list now includes new terms, definitions and key considerations for: Certified Health Coach; National Board Certified Health and Wellness Coach; and Wellness Coach. The list is available to both members and non-members and located on the Academy Scope of Practice webpage.

Who Knew Blue Could be so Becoming?

Each June we celebrate Men’s Health Month to heighten the awareness of preventable health problems and encourage early detection and treatment of disease for boys and men. It was created by a Joint Resolution of the U. S Congress in 1994 and promoted ever sense.

This campaign allows health care providers, public policy makers, the media, and individuals an opportunity to encourage men and boys to seek regular medical advice and early treatment for disease and injury.

Check out www.menshealthmonth.org for more information, resources, screening guidelines, media toolkits and more.

Don’t Forget About Food Safety at Home

As we slide into the “dog days of summer” it’s always a good time to think about home food safety. For those of us who work in patient care, food safety for the facility is something that is constantly on our minds. Sometime those precautions seem to get a little more lax when we get into our home environments, so here are a couple of tips to consider:

  • Clean out the fridge! It’s easy to let the to-go boxes and wrapped leftovers get pushed to the back of the refrigerator. Take some time this weekend to pull out the items that have over stayed their welcome and clean the shelves with a cleaning then sanitizing solution. While you’re at it, the freezer could a little TLC too.
  • In Mississippi we tend to grill out all year long, but in the summer it’s a great way to use a healthy cooking method and not heat up the house. Check out this article from the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics for more tips.
  • If desktop dining is in your future, remember to clean and sanitize that space, just as you would expect any other dining table to be taken care of. Also, time/temperature control is essential for these meals too. It is amazing all the items that are available to help with this.

For more tips on home food safety, check out this website from the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.
