The long anticipated 2015-2020 Dietary Guidelines for Americans is now available! The Dietary Guidelines encourage Americans to make changes in their current diets to establish healthier eating patterns throughout their lifespans. Some of the notable changes in the 2015-2020 Dietary Guidelines is the absence of a recommendation for daily consumption of cholesterol; using egg yolk and shrimp as examples of lean proteins which are high in cholesterol but acceptable in a healthy diet because they are low in saturated fat. There is also a greater focus on added sugars in the American diet with a recommendation to reduce added sugars to less than 10% of total calories per day. Teenage boys and adult men are also highlighted due to an overconsumption of protein with the recommendation to reduce overall protein consumption by increasing vegetables and other under consumed food groups. Lastly, there is an emphasis on support in the 2015-2020 Dietary Guidelines; that we all have a role in supporting healthy eating patterns as well as individuals making healthy lifestyle changes.
